I just felt too much, is what I told her. So, I told her I’d try them for a little bit, but I wasn’t depressed. And I spoke with her, and her initial reaction was to suggest antidepressants. ![]() Most games now have an online component, in fact, we’ve made Black Ops 3 completely playable online!Īs a matter of studio philosophy, we also believe that, regardless of advancement in online technology, there are always going to be players who just enjoy playing the game couch co-op style with friends and family in the living room. I think it's the natural evolution of the game industry to go online, which is where the majority of gamers reside now. Why do you think this is a priority for the team? Why do you think that is? Call of Duty keeps supporting it. It surprises even us sometimes how frequently people ask for it and thank us for continuing to provide it.Įvery year it seems like you see less and less options for local multiplayer, especially in AAA titles. We believe there are a lot of players who play local split-screen with friends on the couch at home, in dorm rooms, at work, and we hear about it a lot from players through social media. We do have a lot of data about how players play online, and we can extrapolate some information from that, but it does fall into the territory of "best estimates" and just feeling like it’s the right feature to give to our fans. The challenge with collecting data on split-screen play is that by nature of players who use it offline, we don’t have any information about how they play the game. In short, it’s actually easier now than it has ever been, and we believe it is worth it for the fun social experience it provides for our players.ĭo you have any data on how many players actually engage with local multiplayer? It’s the power of this new technology, along with the greater capabilities of this generation of consoles and PC, that allows for a more scalable system to support split-screen play. With Black Ops 3, we completely overhauled our graphics engine to support advanced features like deferred rendering, order-independent transparency, which is basically more and better-looking particles, volumetric FX and dynamic lighting. So, of course, split-screen play pushes the limits of any generation’s console technology. Split-screen gameplay will always present technical challenges, because it renders everything that you see on the screen two to four times, depending on how many players you have locally. I caught up a little bit with Dan Bunting, the multiplayer director at Call of Duty developer Treyarch, on why split-screen local multiplayer was still important for a shooter here in 2015.ĭid you have any trouble hitting performance targets with local multiplayer? But all is not lost! The other major shooter of the season, Activision's Call of Duty: Black Ops 3, still supports that traditional couch experience for those that want it. Halo was one of the stalwarts for a while, but Halo 5: Guardians recently phased out its own split-screen multiplayer in pursuit of a higher framerate, and long-time fans aren't pleased. Unless your game says " Nintendo" on the box, chances are you'll be playing it alone, or with a friend that could be on the other side of the world. Over the years, that elemental gaming experience of playing your favorite titles on the couch with your friends has become rarer and rarer, phased out instead for online multiplayer and sprawling single-player experiences. It's a tough time to be a gamer that loves local multiplayer. Kylie’s share, along with comments from Chrissy Teigen and James Charles, launched it into virality, reminding people of the last time she criticized an app in 2018 when she tweeted: “sooo does anyone else not open Snapchat anymore? Or is it just me …” Soon after, Snapchat lost over $1 billion. Bruening, as well as the famous siblings, appear to be protesting the messy, out-of-order algorithm and soon-to-be even more video-heavy platform that Instagram has become. The original Instagram infographic has almost 2 million likes. “(stop trying to be tiktok i just want to see cute photos of my friends.) Your attention is instead focused entirely on clumsily picking up an egg and trying to crack it open on a worktop counter, or cack-handedly pushing a new tyre onto a boxy car, or waving a hexagonal donut somewhere near where your mouth is. The 360-degree and enormous surrounding become taken for granted. While the initial awe of finding yourself standing within a visually enormous cartoon space filled with robots and big chunky vegetables or coffee machines or cars doesn't dissipate as such, it quickly ceases to be what your attention is focused on. Job Simulator is almost more about these controllers than it is VR. No finger control, no, but you can pick up, move and throw objects which do not, in fact, exist, and this is a big part of why the humble brain quickly settles on 'sure, this is basically real, why not?' These are key to the whole experience, because they let you use your hands. ![]() The Vive usually gets talked about as a virtual reality headset and as one that turns your room into a navigable playspace, but there's a third string to its bow, which is its wireless motion controllers. Job Simulator is a hoot, make no bones about it, but it's an inventive and funny showcase rather than something I'm going to repeatedly check in on. Wii Sports was the game you used to demo your console and delight relatives with, yes, but it's also the one that you actually went back to time and again. With its physics-based buffoonery and playful cartoon style it's tempting to call it the Wii Sports of Valve's VR platform, but I think that honour will ultimately go to something else, something I haven't tried or perhaps don't even know about yet. It's hard to say exactly what is the headline act for the Vive, whose first major foray into public availability began today, but Owlchemy's Job Simulator is certainly one of the biggest hitters. The future is here, and it's bloody ridiculous. Job Simulator is a cheerful satire of a possible future in which robots rule the world and recreate the boundlessly mundane human jobs of yesteryear for their own entertainment - but this cannot come close to the fundamental absurdity of what I am doing with a VR headset today. Yet I eschewed sunshine and the joyful company of my capering 2-year-old for what? Why, for performing menial chores in the dark, with an LCD screen mashed directly onto my eyeballs. The outside world is becoming more and more appealing. ![]() For more information on things to do and places to stay in Frankfurt, visit our destination guide. In Austria and Switzerland it is known as Apfelmost. People from Rheinland-Pfalz, the area southwest of Frankfurt, call it Viez, which is derived from Latin. In Frankfurt, you’ll hear it called both Äppelwoi and Ebbelwoi as well as Stöffche. Though in this case, local dialects come into play. Germans love nicknames, and Apfelwein is no exception. There are plenty of small restaurants and taverns offering their own house brews, most notably in the historic district of Alt-Sachsenhausen. One of them, Possmann, even plans to open an Apfelwein museum in 2016.įrankfurt’s Apple Wine Festival takes place in July and August on central Roßmarkt square. Two thirds of Germany’s apples come from Frankfurt’s surrounding region of Hessen, and Frankfurt has two major producers of Apfelwein, called Keltereien or “wine press houses”. Its spritzy, refreshing quality makes it a perfect warm-weather beverage. This makes sense, since apples are harvested in autumn, and the juice takes several months to ferment to the proper alcoholic percentage of around 6%. In addition, a varied stage program awaits the guests of the festival. There are various mixed drinks made from cider, original merchandise items and lots of culinary specialties. How is apple wine made?Īpfelwein has been made the same way for hundreds of years: by pressing apples to extract juice, then adding a yeast that causes the juice to ferment.Īpfelwein is traditionally known as a summer drink. The Frankfurt Apple Wine Festival is a tribute to Frankfurt's most popular beverage. It is served either in traditional glasses with a cut rhombus pattern called Gerippte (literally “ribbed”) or a ceramic vessel called a Bembel. It’s socially verboten, or at least very crass. Note that while Germans may mix lemonade or cola with beer, you should never order a cider mixed with lemonade. It has a tart, sour taste, not sweet like many mass-produced American ciders. You can order yours diluted with soda water, but please don’t try to add anything else. Apfelwein is usually the product of Granny Smith or Bramley apples and has an alcohol content between 4.8 to 7. While the French variation is often sweet to neutral, the German version is sour – sometimes surprisingly so to the unaccustomed palate – and Germans like it that way. Much like the French cidre only less well-known, Frankfurt Apfelwein is fermented apple juice. Here’s one facet of Frankfurt’s cuisine you won’t want to miss (and hardly could). During the festivities, everything at the Rossmarkt, the festival's downtown location, revolves around Hessen's most popular beverage. Each region has its own character, dialect and of course, special dishes. In contrast to the plan introduced by Hogan five years ago, which would have widened wide swaths of highway in the national capital region, the record of decision does not include any action or improvements on I-495 east of I-270. On I-270, the alternative would convert the existing carpool lane in each direction to a variably priced toll lane, and add a new toll lane in each direction from I-495 to north of I-370. The preferred alternative approved by the Federal Highway Administration would add two new variably priced toll lanes in each direction on the Capital Beltway from south of the George Washington Memorial Parkway in Fairfax County, Va., to west of Old Georgetown Road in Montgomery County.
